Dr. Kenton McCall Stewart PhD

Dr. Kenton McCall Stewart PhD, age 91 passed away peacefully at the Oxford Nursing Facility at Canterbury Woods in Williamsville New York on Monday, May 22, 2023. He was born on Friday, August 28, 1931 in Redville Wisconsin the son of the late Wilbur Stewart and the late Velma [ nee Looker] Stewart. Dr. Stewart was married to Ardis [nee Raaths] Stewart, for 68 years, and they had three children; Scot Stewart [Cindy], Jan Anasis [George], and Eric Stewart [Christine], all who attended Williamsville North. He had six grandchildren, Alex Stewart, Jessica Best, Megan Stewart [deceased], Ben Stewart, Sophia Anasis, and Ben Anasis. He joins his older sister Joyce Van Keuren but is survived by his sister Mary Humke. He was a loving husband who enjoyed walks, traveling, and nature hikes with Ardis. He served in the Korean War in the Army Infantry where he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin and was a professor at the University of Buffalo in the Biology Department. He traveled extensively around the world visiting numerous countries and researching freshwater lakes as a limnologist. He published many papers and conducted research work on the finger lakes and over 200 lakes in northeastern United States for over 60 years on freezing and melting dates which has contributed to documenting climate change. He was known as the "Ice Man" for his research which included sampling lakes all through the winter by himself or with graduate students.
